# KSEC v2.0 Technical Whitepaper
## Deterministic Ring-0 Defense Engine & Intent-to-Execution Protocol (IEP v2) for Autonomous AI Agents

**Document Version:** 2.0.0-PUBLIC
**Classification:** Public Technical Specification (TLP:CLEAR)
**Publisher:** KSEC Security Architecture Working Group ([ksec.space](https://ksec.space))
**Target Audience:** Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), Principal Security Architects, Kernel & Infrastructure Leads, and AI Platform Engineers.

## 1. Executive Summary & Problem Statement

As enterprises transition from passive Large Language Models (LLMs) to autonomous AI agents capable of executing real-time database queries, API mutations, and infrastructure operations, traditional user-space security paradigms have fundamentally broken down:

* **The TOCTOU Semantic Execution Gap:** When an autonomous agent declares an intent to invoke a tool, legacy user-space API gateways inspect the request prior to execution. However, in-memory race conditions, indirect prompt injection, dynamic library hooking, or rogue worker threads can mutate the execution payload in the window between policy verification and actual kernel socket transmission (Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use).
* **Asynchronous Syscall Bypass Channels:** Modern high-throughput runtimes leverage Linux `io_uring` shared memory ring buffers to submit I/O operations directly to the kernel—completely bypassing traditional user-space hooks, ptrace monitors, and legacy seccomp-bpf `sys_enter` filters (especially under `IORING_SETUP_SQPOLL` kernel-polling modes).
* **Prohibitive Latency of User-Space Proxies:** Sidecar proxies and Layer-7 user-space firewalls introduce 2–15 ms of serialization and context-switch overhead per hop, severely degrading multi-agent iterative reasoning and high-frequency execution pipelines.

**KSEC v2.0** eliminates these attack vectors by establishing a **sub-35µs deterministic Ring-0 enforcement barrier** directly within the Linux kernel. By unifying eBPF Linux Security Modules (LSM), Native XDP, In-Kernel TLS (kTLS) Framing, and the cryptographic Intent-to-Execution Protocol (IEP v2), KSEC ensures that no network packet or system call leaves the host unless it is cryptographically bound to a pre-authorized, single-use semantic lease.

### Layer 1: Hardware & Kernel Wire Enforcement (C / eBPF LSM / XDP)
* **Anti-TOCTOU LSM Enforcer:** Attaches directly to synchronous eBPF LSM socket and file hooks (`lsm/socket_connect`, `lsm/socket_sendmsg`). It computes the cryptographic digest of the outgoing wire payload in-kernel via `bpf_crypto` kfuncs, verifies it against the pinned lease map, and consumes the single-use lease atomically before the `sk_buff` enters the network stack.
* **Zero-Copy kTLS Stream Inspector:** Hooks `sock_ops` connection state transitions across configured database and RPC endpoints, dynamically elevating sockets to Linux kTLS (`TCP_ULP`) and attaching `sk_msg` verdict programs to inspect plaintext frames inside the kernel prior to NIC encryption.
* **Synchronous io_uring Containment:** Enforces mandatory access control via kernel 6.x+ `lsm/uring_cmd` and `lsm/uring_sqpoll` hooks alongside ring submission interceptors. Unauthorized asynchronous I/O opcodes (`IORING_OP_CONNECT`, `IORING_OP_SENDMSG`, `IORING_OP_WRITE`) lacking a valid cgroup-bound lease are synchronously rejected with `-EPERM` before ring consumption, triggering immediate cgroup freeze and process termination.
* **Native XDP DDoS & Exfiltration Limiter:** Executes at the NIC driver queue level prior to `sk_buff` allocation, enforcing per-agent token-bucket rate ceilings exceeding 1.42 Mpps.

### Layer 2: Intent-to-Execution Protocol (IEP v2) Gateway (Rust Control Plane)
* **Cryptographic Lease Authority:** Evaluates agent tool-call ASTs against deterministic policy graphs and issues short-lived, Ed25519-signed execution leases containing a 64-bit cryptographic nonce, canonical payload digest, cgroup identity binding, and strict nanosecond TTL.
* **Kernel-Assisted TCP Stream Framing:** Leverages in-kernel `strparser` and `sockmap` state machines across active socket cookies to reassemble segmented Layer-7 protocol frames without exhausting eBPF stack limits, neutralizing MTU fragmentation and TCP split-handshake evasion.
* **Semantic Drift & Entropy Guard:** Computes sub-microsecond information-theoretic (Hartley-Shannon) entropy and vector trajectory distance across multi-turn agent contexts to detect gradual prompt poisoning and covert exfiltration encoding.

### Layer 3: Distributed State & Synchronization Fabric
* **Lock-Free CRDT Control Plane:** Synchronizes policy revocations and distributed agent taint states across cluster nodes using conflict-free replicated data types (LWW-Element-Set) anchored by IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) hardware clocks (sub-10ns drift tolerance), preventing split-brain authorization windows.

### Layer 4: Autonomous Wire Mitigation & Counterfactual Forensics
* **Sub-35µs Wire-Frame Neutralizer:** When an unauthorized DDL/DML mutation or Row-Level Security (RLS) violation is detected mid-stream on database wire protocols (e.g., PostgreSQL v3 / gRPC), the `sk_msg` filter performs sequence-preserving in-place frame neutralization (converting the malicious command into a no-op/rollback transaction frame of identical byte length to preserve TCP SEQ/ACK state) and schedules an immediate out-of-band connection reset.
* **Causal DAG Forensics Engine:** Streams blocked Ring-0 telemetry via lock-free BPF RingBuffers to an isolated forensic engine that simulates the prevented payload against schema dependency graphs, quantifying exact record exposure and financial blast radius for executive incident reporting.

## 3. Intent-to-Execution Protocol (IEP v2) Specification

### 3.1 Canonical Lease Data Model (64-Bit Aligned Kernel Schema)
To satisfy strict eBPF verifier alignment constraints and prevent unaligned memory access penalties across x86_64 and ARM64 architectures, IEP v2 leases utilize an explicitly aligned 128-byte cache-line-friendly structure within pinned kernel maps:

```c
/* Abstracted Public Specification - 8-Byte Aligned Kernel Map Entry */
struct ksec_lease_spec {
    __u64 nonce;                 /* Cryptographic single-use lease identifier */
    __u64 expires_monotime_ns;   /* Strict expiration in CLOCK_MONOTONIC_RAW space */
    __u64 cgroup_id;             /* Kernel cgroup v2 inode binding (Anti-PID Spoofing) */
    __u64 socket_cookie;         /* Optional binding to specific kernel socket instance */
    __u32 consumed_state;        /* Atomic state flag: 0 = Active, 1 = Consumed/Revoked */
    __u32 allowed_op_mask;       /* Bitmask of permitted LSM / io_uring classes */
    __u32 taint_policy_level;    /* Mandatory data sensitivity clearance bitmask */
    __u32 reserved_pad;          /* Explicit 64-bit alignment padding */
    __u8  payload_sha256[32];    /* Canonical SHA-256 digest of authorized wire AST */
    __u8  ed25519_signature[64]; /* Control-plane Ed25519 signature over lease fields */
};
```

### 3.2 Cryptographic Enforcement Lifecycle
1. **Intent Attestation:** The AI agent runtime submits a structured tool-execution intent to the local KSEC Control Plane over an attested Unix domain socket.
2. **Canonicalization & Policy Verification:** The gateway parses the protocol AST, verifies structural invariants, and computes the canonical wire digest (`payload_sha256`).
3. **Ring-0 Lease Pinning:** Upon approval, the Control Plane verifies its Ed25519 signature and inserts the lease into a write-restricted eBPF hash map (`BPF_F_RDONLY_PROG` from user-space tampering), keyed by `[cgroup_id, nonce]` with a strict monotonic TTL (typically 5–50 ms).
4. **Atomic Kernel Verification & Consumption:** When the agent process invokes a network syscall or submits an io_uring SQE, the eBPF LSM hook traps the execution context:
   * Verifies that `bpf_get_current_cgroup_id()` matches `lease->cgroup_id`.
   * Verifies `bpf_ktime_get_ns() < lease->expires_monotime_ns`.
   * Executes an atomic compare-and-swap (`__sync_bool_compare_and_swap(&lease->consumed_state, 0, 1)`). If the lease was already consumed by a concurrent thread, execution is immediately aborted (`-EACCES`).
   * Validates the in-kernel payload digest against `lease->payload_sha256`.
5. **Deterministic Eviction:** Consumed or expired entries are purged immediately on the fast path or reclaimed asynchronously via kernel map LRU/timer callbacks.

## 4. Threat Model & Security Guarantees

### 4.1 Mitigated Threat Vectors
* **In-Memory Payload Tampering (TOCTOU):** Defeated via in-kernel payload hashing immediately prior to socket buffer transmission combined with atomic single-use CAS lease consumption.
* **Multi-Threaded Race Conditions:** Defeated via lock-free atomic CAS operations in Ring-0; even if 100 rogue worker threads attempt to replay a valid nonce simultaneously, exactly one succeeds and 99 are deterministically blocked.
* **PID Reuse & Container Escape Spoofing:** Defeated by anchoring identity to immutable 64-bit kernel `cgroup_id` and socket cookies rather than mutable user-space PIDs.
* **Asynchronous io_uring & Unmonitored Syscalls:** Defeated by enforcing policy at the Linux Security Module (LSM) object layer rather than relying solely on `sys_enter` tracepoints.

### 4.2 Trust Assumptions & Operational Boundaries
* **Kernel & Hardware Integrity:** KSEC v2.0 operates within Ring-0 and assumes a non-compromised host kernel, UEFI Secure Boot enforcement, and restricted `CAP_BPF` / `CAP_SYS_ADMIN` privileges.
* **Fail-Closed vs. Fail-Open Modes:** By default, KSEC v2.0 enforces a strict Fail-Closed posture on critical database and external mutation egress paths; if the Control Plane is unreachable or a lease expires mid-flight, the kernel drops the packet. High-availability clusters may configure bounded Fail-Open-With-Audit modes per cgroup during maintenance windows.
